Mudras

Mudra is a hand gesture which is a symbol of energy. There is a tremendous flow of energy in our hands and each finger represents one of the five elements—the thumb is agni (fire), the forefinger is vayu (air), the middle finger is akash (ether), the ring finger is prithvi (earth) and the little finger is jal (water). It works as a therapy for the body and mind by balancing the ratio of five elements (panch tattvas). Along with Asanas, mudras are employed along with Yogic Meditation to energize the Chakras and calm the mind.

Vaye MudraVayu Mudra-

It is formed by pressing the index finger on the base of the thumb and keeping the thumb on the index finger while keeping the other fingers straight. This mudra helps in diseases like arthritis, trembling in Parkinson's disease. Better results are obtained if it is practiced after Prana mudra.
Vaye MudraPran Mudra-

This Mudra is ford by joining the tip of the little finger and the tip of the ring finger with the tip of the thumb & the other two fingers are kept straight. The mudra helps in pumping the life force into the body. It is beneficial for all types of diseases. Imparts special power to the eyes. It enhances the absorption of vital nutrients and vitamins from the diet, boosting the energy levels of the body.
Apan Vayu Mudra-

This Mudra is formed by folding the index finger at the base of the thumb and join the tips of middle and ring finger with the thumb pressing the index finger with the thumb simultaneously. Rest the hands on the knees keeping the elbow straight. Keep the little finger straight. Perform it with both hands to receive more benefit. The regular practice of this Mudra helps prevent heart attacks and also their recurrence. It also helps in cases of palpitation, depression, slow heart beat, heart sinking feeling, angina etc.
Surya Mudra-

One should practice this Mudra empty stomach by folding the ring finger at the base of thumb and pressing it with the thumb at the second phalange. Keep the rest of the three fingers straight and perform it in sitting position only. It helps in dissolving extra fat of the body by balancing the metabolic rate, prevents and controls obesity. It also burns the excess phlegm and compensates for sluggish digestion. It is very effective in reducing increased cholesterol levels.
Ling Mudra-

One should perform this Mudra by keeping the back straight either in Padmasan or Sukhasan. One may also sit on the chair in case of difficulties. Hold the hands in front of the chest with hands exerting a little pressure against each other. One may perform this Mudra as a therapy daily for time duration one feels comfortable. One should not perform it on full stomach. It works great when the temperature suddenly falls down and one shivers in cold. Practicing this Mudra will generate heat in the body and will provide the necessary warmth. It also relieves the bronchial spasms and calms down the breath.
