Reiki is a Japanese technique for stress reduction and relaxation that also promotes healing. The word Reiki is made of two Japanese words – ‘Rei’ which means Higher Power and ‘Ki’ which is life force energy. So Reiki is actually “spiritually guided life force energy.” It is administered by transmitting this universal life force through the hands of the healer who is attuned to the energy. It is based on the idea that unseen life force energy flows in each and everything in this existence and it is this energy which makes one feels alive. If one’s life force energy is low, then they are more likely to get sick or feel stressed, and if it is high, they are more capable of being happy and healthy.
An amazingly simple technique to learn which is not dependent on one’s intellectual capacity or spiritual development is transferred to the student during a Reiki class. There are 3 levels of Reiki: Reiki 1 and 2 and the Master level. This ability to heal is passed on during an “attunement” given by a Reiki master and allows the student to tap into an unlimited supply of life force energy to improve one’s health and enhance the quality of life.
There are primarily 5 principles on which the healing method of Reiki works. They are:-
- Just for today, I will not be angry.
- Just for today, I will not worry.
- Just for today, I will be grateful.
- Just for today, I will do my work honestly.
- Just for today, I will be kind to every living thing.
The effectiveness and ease of use in the Reiki system is based on the hand positions. The traditional Reiki hand positions cover all the important major chakras and quite a few acupuncture points. Traditionally it is also common to give a whole treatment which will take just over an hour and give a very good overall balancing effect. The client is made to relax, fully clothed, on a couch or seated while the healer holds her hands on or above them. There is no pressure on the body making it ideal for treating all ages and conditions. Since the energy is spiritually guided, it flows wherever it is required and is usually felt as a warm sensation or tingling in the body. Receiving Reiki is a very relaxing and soothing experience.
If used with other natural therapies like meditation, crystals, aroma therapy, etc; Reiki will reinforce its effect faster. It can be used also as complementary therapy, because Reiki is truly a complementary care. It complements and enhances the health care the clients receive from other health care providers.
Reiki can be used for relieving stress, pain, headaches, stomach upsets, back problems, asthma, respiratory problems, menstrual problems, sinus, anxiety and many more. It is a powerful but gentle healer.
